Discouraged by earthly trials, Christ-followers had been captive in Babylonia, and later, scattered throughout the region. Peter encouraged them with the living hope of Jesus Christ. 

It's not uncommon today for Christians to feel lonely, dejected, and misunderstood. In diverse ways we're scattered, if not battered, in a modern America that no longer honors God and the Judeo-Christian ethic.
